“Mrs. Hughes, are you still there?”
“I’m here,” Sarah replied.
“Oh good. I thought I’d lost you for a second. As I was saying, we believe he’s still alive. They found the helicopter wreckage, but your husband was missing. It’s believed he’s been taken hostage.”
“Wait. What? He’s alive?”
“We don’t have confirmation, ma’am, but at the moment, that’s what we believe. Usually in circumstances like this, someone will come forward with claims to the hostages. As soon as we get additional information, we’ll contact you. In the meantime, can I get your current address so I can send someone out to you?”
“Yes, ma’am. I can locate the closest military office to send someone out to visit with you. If you could just give me your address so I can add it to your records, I’ll see that you’re taken care of.”
“Taken care of?” Of course he referred to her mental well-being, but the first thought that crossed her mind was sending someone out to “take care of her.” She’d been in hiding for five months. She wasn’t about to give up her location now. “Um, no, I’m sorry. I’m actually traveling right now…on vacation. You’ll give me a call if you hear anything else?”
“Of course, ma’am. You’ll be the first to hear of any updates. But if I could just get your address—”
“I have to go. I’m sorry.”
She pushed “end” to discontinue the conversation and let the phone drop to the floor.
She hadn’t been aware of Ian’s presence, but sometime during the conversation, he had sat in the chair behind her. He placed both hands on her shoulders, and she leaned her back against his legs.
“Sarah, I’m sorry.”
He had known. That was why he had been on the phone all morning with Will.
She spun around with an accusing glare. “You knew, didn’t you? You knew and you didn’t tell me.”
“Don’t bother, Ian. There’s nothing you can say.”
She tossed her phone into her purse, pushed herself off the floor, and without another word, walked out the door.

Marriott Mesa Hotel and Convention Center is the place to be this weekend 🙂
I will be speaking on a panel this weekend to discuss the ins and outs of book covers. It’s very true that people judge a book by its cover, but the question is – what do we look for in a cover that makes it seem appealing…or not appealing? I’ve put together a short survey to get your opinion. The results gathered from the survey will be used during my panel discussion 🙂 Thank you for your assistance!!! 🙂 I will post results of the survey and my panel discussion in the upcoming weeks 🙂
Two weeks until the release of Indigo Instinct! That means it’s time for another excerpt. Enjoy 🙂
“Mmm,” Tyler sighed a minute later. “We could just sit here for the next couple of hours, and you could keep showing me your appreciation.”
“We could,” Liliana agreed. “We would definitely be safer in the car instead of wandering around out there.”
“Then again, staying safe is never fun. We could meander inside to pass the time. Who knows the next time you’ll get to come to Vegas.”
“I thought you wanted to lay low until your brother shows up.”
“I’m sure we’ll be fine inside. We’ll just get lost in the crowds. You watch auras. I’ll listen to thoughts. We’ll stay aware of our surroundings and be fine.”
“That sounds like a bit of a gamble, don’t you think?”
Tyler laughed. “Was that meant to be a joke? Get it? Gamble. Vegas.”
“I’m glad one of us is amused by this whole situation.”
“Look. How about we roshambo it?”
“Huh? Ro Sham who it? Come again?”
“It’s another term for rock-paper-scissors. Best two out of three. You win—we sit nice and tight until Toby and Rebecka show up. I win—we meander inside and check out the action.”
“Absolutely. After all, we are in Vegas. Remember? Are you up for a little gamble?”
She chewed on her lower lip and sighed. “Fine. Best two out of three?”
“You can’t cheat at this game.”
“Sure you can.”
“Okay. Maybe. I won’t cheat…I promise.” He held a hand out to her, palm up. His other hand formed a fist and hovered over his open palm. “Ready?”
She sighed again and rolled her eyes. “Fine. Let’s go.” She mirrored his hand motions, and on the third fist pound onto her palm, she opened her fist flat to indicate paper.
Tyler grinned when his own hand opened in the paper hand symbol as well. “Again.”
“All right. Go.”
After the fourth attempt at the game, which resulted in a fourth tie, Liliana giggled. “You’re cheating.”
“Seriously? I could say the same about you. You’re reading my mind.”
She giggled again. “Maybe. But you’re reading mine, too.”
“So we’re never going to win this game. It’s like playing tic-tac-toe. We could go round and round all day. There’s no way to win.”
“Sure there is. We just both have to agree not to read each other’s mind.”
“Is that possible?”
Liliana attempted to look serious. “Sure. See, I’m blocking my thoughts from you now. Try to read my mind.”
Tyler was silent for a moment as he stared at her. “Oh, you’re good. You’re right. I can’t read your thoughts. Okay, one more time. One try. Whoever gets it is the winner.”
They held their palms up once more, and on the third fist pound, Tyler held his fist in the rock symbol while Liliana held hers like scissors.
He pounded his rock on top of her scissors. “I win.”
“No! That’s not fair,” she whined. “I knew you were going to do rock, but I couldn’t think fast enough to think what beats rock.”
“Why, whatever do you mean, dear sweet Liliana? Do you mean you were trying to read my mind and…cheat?”
“You forgot to block your thoughts. It’s not my fault.”
“Well, my little cheating vixen. I win. You lose. Let’s go inside.”
“Do you want to rethink this?”
Tyler smirked and with a wink said, “Nope. We’ll leave our stuff in the car. Let’s go.”
INDIGO INSTINCT coming May 20th!!
With only 3 weeks until the release of Indigo Instinct, it’s time to share an excerpt 🙂 Enjoy!!!
“What the hell was that all about?” Eddie hissed from close behind.
With her back to him, Grace continued to fill a pitcher with water at the drink station. Then she turned to him with an innocent grin. “What was what all about?”
“Did that guy give you his phone number?”
“What difference does it make? You’re here with your girlfriend. It would seem to me that you should be paying more attention to her and less attention to who I talk to. It’s really none of your business.”
For a moment, she imagined tossing the ice water over his head but didn’t think that would go over well once word got back to Aunt Mae, as it surely would, so instead, she set the pitcher on a nearby table and took a step away to resist the temptation.
“It is my business. You were the one who just informed me yesterday that trackers are after us again. Do you really think it’s safe to be flirting with strangers?”
“You’re questioning my judgment? You brought your girlfriend along. What are you going to say when the bad guys show up at your motel door? Are you going to make time for introductions? ‘Hey, Jenna, let me introduce the IIA.'” She rolled her eyes and shook her head. “For a smart guy, you’re pretty dumb. I can’t believe you brought her.”
“You told me to!”
“I was desperate to get you here. I didn’t think you’d actually bring her. You couldn’t have just sent her home?”
“Grace, I’m sorry. I should have told you about her earlier. I just… I didn’t know how.”
She shook her head again. “Whatever, Eddie. You made your choice. I need to get back to work. There’s a table waiting to order.”
She swiveled around to go, but he placed a hand on her arm to stop her. “Grace, wait.”
She focused to keep her face expressionless. She would cry later. Not now. “What?”
“Don’t trust that guy. Don’t trust anyone right now.”
“Oh don’t worry. I don’t. I don’t trust anyone.” She nodded her head toward Jenna. “Especially her.”
